Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as looting and violent protests raged in a Minneapolis suburb overnight after officers shot dead a 20-year-old black man during a traffic stop less than 10 miles from where George Floyd was killed.

The National Guard was called in and a curfew was imposed to quell angry demonstrations over the shooting death of Daunte Wright on Sunday in the Brooklyn Center neighborhood.

The unrest came just hours before the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd, was set to resume in a courtroom on Monday.

Police have released few details about the fatal shooting. They said officers tried to arrest Wright after pulling him and his girlfriend over for a traffic violation at about 2pm on Sunday before realizing he had an outstanding warrant.

Officers say that as they tried to arrest him, Wright got back in his car and drove off. An officer fired at the vehicle, striking Wright, but he continued driving for several blocks before hitting another car.

Police have not said if Wright was armed or explained yet why they opened fire.

Wright’s mother says he called her in the moments before to say police had pulled him over for having air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror. It is illegal in Minnesota to have anything hanging from a rear-view mirror.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and his girlfriend, who was a passenger in the car, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say both officers’ body cameras were on and recording during the incident. The state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it was investigating the shooting. Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, said he called her while he was being pulled over to get insurance information for the vehicle because she recently gave the car to him.  She said he told her he had been pulled over because he had air fresheners hanging from his rear-view mirror. Police have only said they pulled Wright over for a traffic violation but have not yet given details. Describing the call, Wright’s mother said: ‘I said when the police officer comes back to the window, put him on the phone and I will give him the insurance information.  ‘Then I heard the police officer come to the window and say, ‘Put the phone down and get out of the car.’ And Wright said ‘why’. He said, ‘We’ll explain to you when you get out of the car.”

‘A minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered, who was the passenger in the car, and said that he’d been shot and she put it on the driver’s side, and he was laying there lifeless,’ Katie told gathered media on Sunday afternoon.    ‘I heard scuffling, and I heard police officers say, ‘Daunte, don’t run,” she said through tears. The call ended, and she dialed his number again. His girlfriend answered and said he was dead in the driver’s seat. Wright’s mother huddled with loved ones near the scene of the fatal shooting and pleaded for her son’s body to be removed from the street in the hours that followed, the Star Tribune reports.

A Brooklyn Center police officer told people at the scene that the victim’s body could not be moved until members of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, arrived and investigated.

As news of Wright’s death traveled, about 100 people, some visibly upset and one carrying a sign demanding ‘Justice for George Floyd,’ confronted police in riot gear.

Protests started peacefully, according to eyewitness reports, but soon turned unruly, with demonstrators vandalizing two police vehicles, pelting them with stones and jumping on them.

Wright’s mother urged for calm, telling protesters: ‘All the violence, if it keeps going it’s only going to be about the violence. We need it to be about why my son got shot for no reason. We need to make sure it’s about him and not about smashing police cars, because that’s not going to bring my son back.’

As the evening went on, more people took to the streets and looting broke out in other parts of the city, including at a Walmart, as tensions boiled over in scenes all-too-familiar from last summer’s protest and subsequent riots.

Police were seen firing tear gas to disperse angry demonstrators protesting the killing and National Guard troops were on the scene just before midnight local time as looters broke into some 20 businesses.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott announced a city-wide curfew until 6am local time (11:00 GMT), while all school buildings have been closed and local events set for Monday cancelled.

‘We want to make sure everyone is safe. Please be safe and please go home,’ he tweeted.

As the crowds started to become more agitated, police fired rubber bullets, hitting at least two people in the crowd, with at least one man left bleeding from the head. After nightfall, 100 to 200 of protesters had gathered outside the suburban police department, which was guarded by hundreds of officers in riot gear.  Outside the police building people chanted, ‘Black lives they matter here,’ and ‘Hands up, don’t shoot,’ Police set off flash bangs and sprayed chemical irritants at the crowd. Protesters yelled angrily at a line of police in riot gear holding long batons in front of them. National Guard troops arrived on the scene just before midnight.  Looters also targeted the Brooklyn Center Walmart and nearby shopping mall.  John Harrington, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said at a middle-of-the-night news conference that marchers had descended upon the Brooklyn Center Police Department building after the Sunday afternoon shooting. Rocks and other objects were thrown at officers but the protesters had largely dispersed as of 1:15 a.m. Monday, he said. Harrington added that about 20 businesses had been broken into at the city’s Shingle Creek shopping center.  He said law enforcement agencies were coordinating to tame the unrest, and the National Guard was activated.

A woman who lives near the crash scene, Carolyn Hanson, said she saw law enforcement officers pull a man out of a vehicle and perform CPR. A passenger who got out of the car was also covered in blood, Hanson said. The state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it was investigating the shooting. A police officer was also transported to the hospital after sustaining injuries, according to EMS audio. The Minnesota branch of the American Civil Liberties Union said another independent agency should investigate, and demanded the immediate release of any videos of the shooting. The group said it had ‘deep concerns that police here appear to have used dangling air fresheners as an excuse for making a pretextual stop, something police do all too often to target black people.’  Gov. Tim Walz just after 10pm tweeted ‘I am closely monitoring the situation in Brooklyn Center. Gwen and I are praying for Daunte Wright’s family as our state mourns another life of a black man taken by law enforcement.’

Sunday’s shooting was ‘tragic’, said Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott. ‘We are asking the protesters to continue to be peaceful and that peaceful protesters are not dealt with with force,’ he said in a statement.  The shooting happened with Minneapolis already on edge and midway through the trial of the first of four police officers in George Floyd´s death.  Derek Chauvin, a white former Minneapolis police officer was captured on video kneeling for nine minutes on the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old handcuffed black man last May. The trial enters its third week of testimony on Monday.   Floyd’s death sparked U.S. and global protests against police brutality and racial injustice. His death sparked protests and violent demonstrations across Minneapolis seriously damaging hundreds of buildings.

Brooklyn Center is a city with a population of about 30,000 people located on the northwest border of Minneapolis.
